Characterizing wave- and current- induced bottom shear stress: U.S. middle Atlantic continental shelf
Waves and currents create bottom shear stress, a force at the seabed that influences sediment texture distribution, micro-topography, habitat, and anthropogenic use. This paper presents a methodology for assessing the magnitude, variability, and driving mechanisms of bottom stress and resultant sediment mobility on regional scales using numerical model output. The analysis was applied to the Mi...
متن کاملElephant teeth from the atlantic continental shelf.
Teeth of mastodons and mammoths have been recovered by fishermen from at least 40 sites on the continental shelf as deep as 120 meters. Also present are submerged shorelines, peat deposits, lagoonal shells, anz relict sands. Evidently elephants and other large mammals ranged this region during the glacial stage of low sea level of the last 25,000 years.
متن کاملOn Estuarine and Continental-Shelf Circulation in the Middle Atlantic Bight
We shall attempt in this chapter to trace the development of ideas about circulation over the continental shelf in the Middle Atlantic Bight and in the major estuaries which drain into the Middle Atlantic Bight. The term Middle Atlantic Bight refers to the curved section of the continental shelf off the eastern United States stretching between Cape Hatteras to the south and Cape Cod and Nantuck...

متن کاملFall-Winter Current Reversals on the Texas-Louisiana Continental Shelf
Fall-winter recurrence of current reversal from westward to eastward is identified on the Texas-Louisiana continental shelf using the current meter [Texas-Louisiana Shelf Physical Oceanography Program (LATEX-A)] and near surface drifting buoy [Surface Current and Lagrangian Drift Program (SCULP-1)] observations in 1993 and 1994. Reversal events roughly satisfy the Poisson distribution with one ...
